On Grief

Grief Doesn't Only Live in Tragedies

It lives in ordinary moments, for decades afterward.

Dr Madelyn Fletcher Stark•Reflection
A quiet landscape can hold the memories grief carries into ordinary moments.
A quiet landscape can hold the memories grief carries into ordinary moments.

We are taught to expect grief in the obvious places. At the funeral. At the graveside. In the first raw weeks when the world tilts and nothing sits right. We brace for those, and somehow we survive them.

What no one prepares us for is the way grief waits. It does not leave when the casseroles stop arriving and the cards stop coming. It settles quietly into the ordinary, and it stays there, sometimes for the rest of our lives.

I lost my sister when she was eighteen. For years afterward, I did not grieve her most at her grave. I grieved her while pulling a wagon down a sidewalk, the way I once pulled her. I grieved her at a kitchen table set for one fewer than it used to be. I grieved her in the particular slant of light in early September, the season she left us.

This is the thing that took me decades to understand: the tragedy is a single day, but the ordinary moments go on forever. A song comes on. A drawer opens. A stranger, somewhere, says a name that used to be hers. And the grief returns, not because anything is wrong, but because the love never ended, and love has to go somewhere.

For a long time I thought this meant I was failing at healing. That grief resurfacing years later was a sign I had not done the work, had not moved on, had not let go. I know better now. The grief that arrives in ordinary moments is not a failure. It is the shape love takes once the person is gone.

If you find yourself ambushed by sorrow in the middle of a Tuesday, years after the loss, please know that there is nothing broken in you. You are not stuck. You are simply still carrying someone, and the small moments are where you set them down and pick them up again.

The ordinary is not where grief goes to torment us. It is where our love goes to keep living.

Grief is simply love that has outlived the person we gave it to.
